To America I love, for which my ancestors fought in the war of your independence and for which countless others have since served and sacrificed to preserve and fulfill their beautiful dream of your freedom, this sincere expression is in honor of you and of the heroes of your liberty.
For deeply personal reasons, I earnestly honor Veterans on holidays like Memorial Day. In 1966, I was born without my sense of sight. Nearly one year later, I received partial sight by a literal miracle. Yet, the vision doctor advised my parents that, while I would not need the services of the blind school, my eyes would still be so poor that I would struggle in the mainstream but, unpampered in that environment, I would adapt and endure to achieve some success. He prescribed only my wits and a small pair of shaded plastic glasses to navigate on my journey. Since that day, I made the most of what I was given at every step toward finding some success; and I have not lost sight of what made all good things possible in my life – God and the opportunities of the free country for which many fought and sacrificed.
Some of the handful of great encouragers of my upbringing were both faithful saints and patriotic Veterans of the WW2 era. They inspired me to make good of my life. They urged me to rise to my full potential and positively contribute to society. As a result, I grew to become all kinds of determined and even stubborn in the face of those who underestimated and discounted me. Good men and women of that great generation equipped me to fight my personal war against the odds with a can-do attitude. While they were still with me in this life, I actively thought of pleasing them in my efforts to overcome barriers of low expectations. I even tried to join the Air Force after high school, as unrealistic as that might seem (I learned much about aircraft and aviation from Dad). Of course, I was as rejected for the same reason of poor vision that the BMV denied me a driver’s license (although I managed to pass driver ed); but I at least had the freedom to try to follow in the footsteps of those who had built me up with such confidence. Suffice it to say, such hopefulness fueled other aspirations that moved me well beyond the rejections, denials, and even failures. Although I could not exactly follow in their footsteps, I have done my utmost to honor their memories by not squandering my life. You probably could not imagine other extents to which I went to prove my worth as well as strides I made in doing so.
In contrast to those who do not honor Veterans, I want to say much more than “thank you for your service.” From me, such a gesture would be like thanking the farmer of an apple orchard for planting and maintaining his trees without sharing how nourishment of the sweet fruit of his crop made a key difference in my life. I wonder where else I could have come so far if not born in the USA made possible by Veterans. So, my meaning here is to remember and thank you, Veterans, in my spirit of deep gratitude for chances afforded me by your service. You are due much credit for my outlook and outcome.
I was twenty years young in 1987 (a year after the Air Force rejected my enlistment) when one of the encouragers of my youth, a true saint and my patriotic Pastor who often expressed to me his heartfelt love for America, inspired me to write original music upon his request for a choral piece to accompany him in a bicentennial celebration for the United States Constitution. The large venue where he was to present was organized and sponsored by a major corporation. Like that Pastor who filled me with so much confidence that I had moved on to study both music composition and computer science at a major university, I was overjoyed by that opportunity to give something meaningful back of what God and this country made possible in me.
This year (2022), I created this presentation in loving memory of my old dear friend, Pastor Kenneth R. Riden, who unexpectedly passed away in 2020. I sorely miss him and cherish precious memories of our times of fellowship. Yet, his heart for God and country endures in me. If he were still here, he would encourage us all in the patriotic spirit of the very song that he inspired in me. He would rally us to hold fast to our heritage of freedom in these troubled times, and he would embrace all Veterans each day in memorial and in the spirit of this presentation that I now pass along to honor you.
Thank you, all Veterans, for being heroes of my life.
In 1739, my paternal ancestors fled persecution to find freedom in this land where they later fought in the American Revolution. Because of that great generation, many have since been born into freedom but also sacrificed for God and country to defend freedom. We owe much to them and certainly should stand up, be proud as Americans, and show the world how we can still be free in this nation founded and died for by those who made dreams of freedom come true for tired, poor, and huddled masses that yearned to breathe free.
The bell is now for us to toll. Let freedom ring!
God bless America!

~Verse 1~
It was dark where I was broken.
My spirit cried.
Then You came, a gleaming presence,
The source of light.
~Verse 2~
I heard you say how much You love me.
Will You be mine?
Came in my heart. Replaced the sorrow
With joy Divine.
~Bridge 1~
You gave me dreams. You gave me hope.
You gave me songs to sing.
Then in return, with all of my heart,
I gave You all of me.
Your Spirit is here. You’ve lived in my heart
Since I fell to my knees.
~Verse 3~
Are you lost? And are you broken?
Your spirit cries?
There’s a man. He’ll find and heal you.
Ask Him inside.
~Verse 4~
Rejection breaks. Resentment hardens
A bitter heart.
But Jesus mends with love, sweet comfort.
That’s where He starts.
~Bridge 2~
He gives us dreams. He gives us hope.
He gave me songs to sing.
Then in return, with all of my heart,
I gave Him all of me.
His Spirit is here. He’s lived in my heart
Since I fell to my knees
~Chorus~
And said Goodbye.
Turned my head and walked away
From life of dark,
To Heaven, His light leads the way.
So when He comes again,
I’ll go to meet Him in the sky.
To the world behind,
I already said, “Goodbye.”

- Inspirational Music and Revised Lyrics by Jeff H. Ulrich (2021)
- Composed by Jeff H. Ulrich (1984)
Note: The above lyrics are unsung in this instrumental version but are included here to add meaning.
In 1984, I was moved to write this song. At 18 years old, there I sat at an old out-of-tune upright piano as I musically and lyrically poured out my heart. Suffice it to say here, I was working through bitter resentment in me over one of the biggest letdowns of my life.
Although therapeutic to write at the time, the original lyrics were of my bitter heart. I had to live and grow for years before I found meaning that inspired me to write lyrics true to this special music that, now apparent to me, was given from above.
"And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses." - Mark 11:25 (NKJV)
With revised lyrics in hand in this year of 2021, I finally sat down to record the entire orchestration as I had conceived it in 1984. Upon finally hearing its completion after 37 years, I reflected on how good to me and patient God was in that early time of my life when I was most spiritually immature and unworthy. Yet, I was then reaching for God; and I now realize all the more that He sent answers that I would come to understand upon conviction and repentance of my old spirit of unforgiveness.
As for the context of the word, "Goodbye," as used in the title and chorus of this song, Fanny Crosby was apparently in that spirit when she wrote her 1879 hymn, "Take The World, But Give Me Jesus" (click here to read her lyrics). In the last verse, she wrote, "Take the world, but give me Jesus. | In His cross my trust shall be, | Till, with clearer, brighter vision, Face to face my Lord I see." Like her meaning, I said my goodbye to a dark life of the world to follow the light of the world, Jesus, whom I am prepared to meet in the sky at His coming where I will clearly see His face with brighter vision.
"Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.'" - John 8:12 (NKJV)
I pray that this song of my faith would inspire and strengthen you to overcome the challenges in your life with my Savior.

~Verse 1~
When Jesus comes like a thief in the night,
With Him I’ll go as would a bride.
Left behind will be all my sorrows. My suf(fe)ring. My empty grave.
Those things of death will pass away.
~Verse 2~
Through Heaven’s gate, I will enter His home.
The place of dreams. Real to the soul.
Through the street flow life-giving waters. The river from where He reigns
Comes from the place I’ll see His face
~Chorus 1~
Where I’ll stand at His throne with the angels.
I’ll see the wings of His angels.
I’ll be there. Paradise eternal to share.
I’ll be there with the angels.
~Verse 3~
In Heav(en) above, at the feet of the Son,
No shadow falls. No day is done.
There I’ll go to worship my Savior who touched me so I could see
To find that place He made for me.
~Verse 4~
For loving Him and for walking His way,
Upon my brow, He’ll see His name.
All things new, the tree will be standing and bearing near where I’ll be.
There will be perfect harmony
~Chorus 2~
Where I’ll sing at His throne with the angels.
I’ll sing the psalms of His angels.
I’ll be there. Paradise eternal to share.
I’ll be there with the angels.

- Inspirational Music and Revised Lyrics by Jeff H. Ulrich (2021)
- Composed by Jeff H. Ulrich (1985)
- Featuring Vocalist, Jessie Morgan and 3rd Backup Vocalist in Chorus, Esther Denis
I was 18 in 1985 when the Spirit moved me to write this song about Heaven in my reflection of what the Bible says about that everlasting paradise but also of my sense of assurance that Jesus -- the One who miraculously healed my eyes as well as once raised me from near-death upon mending my broken spirit -- is always with me and will receive me there one day with open arms for persevering and making good of the life that He has given me.
I wrote the lyrics in careful consideration of what the Bible says about Heaven. In particular, I drew from the following four verses:
"Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.'" Then He who sat on the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new.' And He said to me, 'Write, for these words are true and faithful.'"
- Revelation 21:1-5 (NKJV)
"And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever."- Revelation 22:1-5 (NKJV)
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." - John 3:16
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”- Revelation 2:7
The Bible elsewhere challenges our imaginations even more as to what Heaven is like. Yet, although what we do know is already difficult to fathom, what we will not know until we enter God's Kingdom in eternity is beyond our human comprehension. I, however, well understand and most appreciate what Revelation 21:4 specifically says: "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain..." Truly, that alone is going to be Heaven to me where such suffering has no place. I pray that this song of my faith would inspire you to overcome in your life with the precious Savior who longs for us to join Him in paradise.

~Verse 1~
Called upon the angels high. Called upon the stars.
Called upon the ones I loved. But they were too far.
No one answered. No one knew. No one heard my cry
But Jesus when I called His name. To Him, I owe my life.
He loves me.
~Verse 2~
What’s the matter? What’s the reason you won’t even pray
In your search for someone who can turn your night to day?
No one else cares more for us than Christ, God’s only Son.
So call upon Jesus’ name, believing He’s the One.
He loves you.
~Chorus~
Take us in Your arms, O Lord.
Mend our broken souls.
Fill our minds with meaning,
Our hearts with blessed hope,
As we follow You to Your place of peace in everlasting life
Where yokes will be broken, our shackles removed; for Christ
Set us free.
~Verse 3~
Even though yesterday could never be undone.
Forgiven are humbled who repent rather than run.
Comfort in redemption is the peace from Heav(en) above.
Such grace is free to those who come to Christ, the Lamb of God.
He loves you. {Repeat chorus x2}
- Inspirational Music and Revised Lyrics by Jeff H. Ulrich (2021)
- Composed by Jeff H. Ulrich (1985)
- Featuring Vocalist, Steve Myles and Pianist, Grant Larcom
The bitter lemon in sweet lemonade should humbly give all glory to its maker. Likewise, its maker should be so humble to give all glory to God who made possible all that would refresh the spirit as well as the body.
I was 19 in 1985 when I cried out to the Lord in the words that became the prayerful plea of my original first verse to this song. Although I firmly believed in Christ by then, I was a slave to uncertainty about my self-worth and future. I had become like a bitter lemon but with the strong sense that nothing truly good could come of me by my own means. So, I prayerfully sought meaning from Christ who had given me sight and had strengthened me to come that far. I spoke my heart to Him and wrote down His responses as I felt led by His Spirit. The lyrics to this song are of that supernatural conversation.
Many years passed before I fully realized the meaning of this song about the freedom that comes to those who call upon Christ for redemption; but I felt God at work in its conception and captured as such once I sat down at the piano and began to pour my heart into the introduction.
To be honest, I was not musically suited at the time to write for such a genre or even play the piano part. Yet, I wrote the score and filed it away for private reflection. More than 36 years later, I rediscovered the manuscript and indeed realized that the freedom for which I prayerfully yearned had since become mine; and I humbly submit to you that only God could accomplish so much in and through a lemon like me – including this song.
"Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free." - Psalm 118:5 (ESV)
I pray that this song of my faith would inspire you to reach out to and believe in Christ who loves you more than anyone in this world. He would set you free and lead you to His place of real peace.

Although meaning to this song sings in my heart, the only words that I felt led to apply are in the title – “When I See You," and are apparent as for the start of the chorus melody. I felt led to make way for listeners to relate to what they hear in the music and read in the title rather than lyrically impose my most personal meaning. As you listen to this song and reflect, may your heart be moved to think about the true saints of your life who made a difference in you.
- Inspirational Music by Jeff H. Ulrich (2021)
When you see photos of dear departed or now-distant family or friends who are the true saints of your lives, does their love for you still shine through on your darkest days with the light of God’s hope?
Upon recent discovery of a photo of my paternal grandparents that I had never before seen, my soul felt such a warm sensation in reflection of how much they embraced me in the spirit of Christ’s love. Had they not shown me such love and grace as a child, I would have completely lost all sense of belonging long ago as a young adult. By then, they passed away. The spirit of their loving nature, however, still lives in me and seems to beckon to my heart in the worst of times.
As I gazed upon that old photo, in my heart their rang a melody of God’s love that persisted in me for several days until I made time to record it.

~Verse~
God, I know You hear me when my heart breaks and my spirit is afraid.
Lord, I feel You with me when I close my eyes to pray away my day.
And as You bear with me my sorrow, I draw hope to face tomorrow from your grace.
~Chorus~
God, give hope in the night.
Fill me with joy by the morning light.
Take away my fear.
Lord, by Your strength, I’ll live through the night.
When the storm comes tonight,
Peace, enter me if my spirit cries.
Wipe away my tears.
Lord, by Your comfort, I will survive.
- Inspirational Music by Jeff H. Ulrich (2021)
- Composed and Lyrics by Jeff H. Ulrich (1984)

Like most of my music, this one is an artifact of a much-younger me who cried out from the wilderness for the unseen -- rather than look for hope in low places.
In 1992, I was earnestly praying to God for His help and strength to endure overwhelming hardship and physical suffering. Out of one of those deeply devotional moments at the piano where I often prayed while softly playing sacred hymns of worship, I was moved to play the chords and pray the lyrics now captured in this video recording.
The following Bible verse was on my heart when I wrote this song:
"...Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning." - Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)
Looking back after so many years, I testify of the moments when I conceived this song that God blessed me for being all kinds of stubborn in longing for Him above all.
A few of the photos in this video, I took myself from the bank of a nearby river. After I took my first photo, a raging storm unexpectedly rushed in. Rather than retreat, I remained to take several more photos of the storm clouds as they approached and then of the ensuing thunder showers and lightning all around me. As quickly as nature rained down such fury on me, however, the storm passed over and left behind an atmosphere of peace and serenity, longer lasting than the brief eerie calm that came before. So to speak, greater than sensations of peace and serenity is joy that comes in the morning to those who hope in the Lord through both storms and weeping in the night.
May this music video be an encouragement and inspiration to you who are in need today of God’s comfort, strength, and guidance. He is faithful to those who believe in Him as they make their requests known to Him. Pray to Him in this spirit and wait on Him.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7

Love that God pours into you,
The love within that heals,
From that love you freely gave unto me
Love that is as real.
~Verse 2~
Jesus thanks for listening to me
When I called Your name.

So I could have grace.
The love that You showed unto me,
The love of God that heals,
Is the love that saved my broken heart.
Yours is truly real.

- Inspirational Music by Jeff H. Ulrich (2023)
- Arranged by Jeff H. Ulrich (1994)
- Inspired by Original Lyrics & Melody, He's in Control, by my Father, Clarence (1993)
Click here to download the verses of the 1994 sheet music, He's In Control, by my father, Clarence.
In the early 1990's, my father had perhaps a one-time extraordinary inspiration in music.
Dad has always had artistic talent as a singer, and he is certainly gifted as an artist who can very well draw and paint whatever he sees or imagines. However, he has neither been or aspired to be an instrumentalist or composer of music. Yet, once in 1993, meaningful words with a melody entered his heart. Suffice it to say, the message of the lyrics was a timely answer for him.
Upon hearing what Dad wrote, I immediately discerned what he had been given. As music has often been a channel through which I have been given answers, I know the difference between music and lyrics that came from above vs. music and lyrics that came from the imagination.
By 1994, I filled in the blanks for Dad by writing the score for his copyright and by arranging and recording the accompaniment for him to use when he sings at Church.
One day in 2021, I was listening to old recordings and rediscovered the accompaniment after 32 years. Although the background music was intact, I realized that we had never taken the extra step to record the lead. If only I had the voice to sing the melody, but I decided at that point to at least record it as an instrumental to share it here.
The title of Dad's song is, "He's In Control." His is a song of hope, as made apparent in the caption as well as in the video thumbnail of white roses (represents hope) displayed on a piano.
Although the musical style of Dad's song is quite traditional, its mere sound discernibly resonates with sacred sincerity that perfectly suits the meaning of its lyrics. It is no wonder that, a few years after Dad first shared his song with a handful of local Churches, he encountered Churches several states away that had come into possession of its sheet music and were applying it to their music worship services. Truly, this is a sacred work to be preserved among longstanding others.
My brother played bass in this recording, the only recording in which we collaborated. He is a gifted bass player who flawlessly played in one take what he improvised in those moments.
I covered all of the other instruments in this recording, but there was one great challenge to overcome -- I did not yet know how to play the guitar. For this recording, I borrowed an acoustic guitar from a friend and sufficiently learned how to play only a few hours prior to recording. Because I had no calluses on my finger tips at that point, my fingers felt like I was driving razor blades into them; and a few of the strings ultimately did cut me before the session ended. Since then, I have come to very much enjoy playing guitar. Because of this song, I took the plunge.
A fun fact concerning my mother is that neither my brother or I could hold a candle to her musical abilities. She played both bass and guitar in her lifetime and then some. She is also an amazing pianist as well as organist. The writing bug in me began with her. Therefore, she had a hand in making possible this music to Dad's song of hope.
May my recording of Dad's song fill you with a sense of hope, and I welcome you to download the sheet music and accompaniment as MP3 to freely share and use in worship (links are below).
